Business Sense: Rethinking Your Hiring Technology: An eRecruiting Checklist for Employers

February 24, 2021
Source: U.S. Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP)

Technology has transformed every aspect of the workplace, including the recruiting and hiring process. From online job applications to artificial intelligence (AI), companies of all sizes use eRecruiting systems to screen candidates, streamline the application process, and train and communicate with employees.

However, not all eRecruiting tools are accessible to people with disabilities. This inadvertently excludes applicants from your talent pool and creates an uneven playing field for some job seekers.

Given this reality, companies need to ensure their eRecruiting systems do not impede hiring qualified people with disabilities. To help, two ODEP-funded technical assistance centers—the Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN) and the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT)—collaborated to develop a new resource that addresses this critical issue.

The Checklist for Employers: Facilitating the Hiring of People with Disabilities Through the Use of eRecruiting Screening Systems, Including AI, highlights questions and issues that various employer representatives should consider when evaluating their existing eRecruiting tools and when procuring new ones. It presents questions for company leadership, human resources personnel, equal employment opportunity managers, and procurement officers in an easy-to-follow format, and resources for further information.

The Checklist, along with targeted guidance from PEAT, can help ensure that employers are building, buying, and implementing eRecruiting tools and workplace technologies accessible to everyone.
