Rock climbing in the comfort of your own living room and accessible to all abilities? That’s a big “yes.” In fact, rock climbing, basketball and more are available through the Virtual Reality SportsAbility Park that is part of SportsAbility 2021.

The SportsAbility Alliance’s annual SportsAbility event runs through the month of April in a variety of locations throughout Florida. This year’s event includes a virtual conference and tradeshow and provides opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in a variety of sports and recreational activities. SportsAbility 2021 will feature activities such as boating, SCUBA, fishing, archery, shooting sports, paddling and more. Hands-on training is available to help people of all abilities become more comfortable and confident in being active.

A special component to this year’s event is the Virtual Reality SportsAbility Park. Offered through a partnership with SportsAbility Alliance and Covalent, the VR park allows people with and without disabilities to experience a variety of sporting and recreational activities. It also provides opportunities for people to virtually connect and engage with each other.

“We are engaging with people of all abilities and ages to not only make them aware of the many sports, recreational and leisure opportunities that are available to them, but to also encourage their participation,” said Laurie LoRe-Gussak, executive director, SportsAbility Alliance. “Our SportsAbility event is a great way for people to connect with each other—in-person or virtually-- and enjoy the health and wellness benefits of recreation.”

SportsAbility 2021 is a free event. People with and without disabilities, their families, and friends are all welcomed. The event runs from April 8 – 30 and includes:

  • In-Person Activities - Participate in person with recreation opportunities around the state of Florida with pre-registration at www.sportsability.org following COVID-19 protocols. Activities include SCUBA, sailing, biking, fishing, boating, therapeutic horseback riding and more!!
  • Resource Expo - Virtual SportsAbility Expo will include educational presentations and access to resource providers. Attend at your convenience. Register at www.sportsability.org.
  • Virtual Reality - Hang out with friends and make new friends in the SportsAbility VR Park. Shoot fireworks, play basketball or cornhole, climb a waterfall, reach the top of our aerial obstacle course, and more!

SportsAbility is the premier program of SportsAbility Alliance (formerly known as Florida Disabled Outdoors Association.) This program is funded through partnerships and relies on the support of FDOA sponsors, some of which include: Florida Department of Health, Tallahassee Community College, Florida Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Leon County Tourist Development Council and many more. FDOA thanks its sponsors for their involvement and generosity.
