STEM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities Coming to North Carolina
October 3, 2013
Source: North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
The great jobs of tomorrow will be in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). However, people with disabilities are currently underrepresented in these fields in spite of recent advances in the accessibility of information technology and other tools used by working professionals. In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is hosting a STEM career showcase for students with disabilities on Wednesday, October 16, from 10:00am to noon. Sign in for registered participants will begin at 9:30 in the Nature Research Center.
Kathleen Martinez, Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy in the U.S. Department of Labor, has been invited to deliver the keynote address. Martinez is an internationally recognized leader in the field of disability employment policy. She has been blind since birth.
Young students with disabilities will also have an opportunity to talk with college students and working professionals with a variety of disabilities. What is being done to make data and information more accessible? How do you overcome the stigma associated with disabilities? How do you find your unique personal strength and develop it into a successful career?
Please note that the intended audience for this conference is academic students with disabilities in grades 3-12 that are performing at or near grade level. Please note that this conference is free of cost but does require pre-registration. For those that cannot attend in person, we will be livestreaming the conference: registration is not required to view the livestream.
