Southeast ADA Center Implements ADA and Self-Advocacy for Students and Youth at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind

The Southeast ADA Center, a project of the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University College of Law, has been awarded a contract to develop a youth and self-advocacy curriculum for the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind.  The school, which serves students ranging from early childhood to high school, will implement an eight module training curriculum that will introduce students to skills and strategies that will assist them as they transition from school to adult roles. 

The modules address the Pre-employment transition services (Pre-ETS) mandated by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA). Activities include job exploration counseling, work-based learning experiences, counseling opportunities for enrollment in comprehensive transition or postsecondary educational programs, and instruction in self-advocacy.

The mission of the South Carolina school for the Deaf and the Blind, located in Spartanburg, SC., is to ensure that individuals who are deaf, blind or have multi-sensory disabilities realize maximum success through high quality educational programs.  The Southeast ADA Center will also partner with their state affiliate, ABLE SC, to provide training and technical consultation as the school implements the curriculum in fall of 2018.

The curriculum is currently being successfully used at Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (Clarkston, GA), Decatur County Schools (Bainbridge, GA), Georgia Academy for the Blind (Macon, GA), Hall County Schools (Gainesville, GA), and Troup County Schools (LaGrange, GA).

The Southeast ADA Center continues to look for other partners to employ the curriculum.
