New PEAT Resource Summarizes DOJ Action Related to Technology Accessibility
November 4, 2016
Source: Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT)
The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT) has released a new online resource to help employers understand U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) priorities related to the accessibility of websites and other information and communication technologies (ICT). DOJ has recognized that access to ICT is a civil right and a vital employment issue for individuals with disabilities, and as of May 2016 entered into 167 settlement agreements addressing ICT accessibility. The new PEAT resource summarizes key points from those agreements, offering employers and other covered entities (e.g., state and local governmental entities and public accommodations) a better understanding of ways to proactively comply with existing accessibility-related rules and guidance. While DOJ settlements only apply to the parties involved, they do offer insights into potential actions that DOJ might exact in similar situations.
