CAT Announces Changes to Paratransit Program Georgia Agency Changes Paratransit Eligibility Process

Chatham Area Transit has changed the application process for its paratransit program.

According to a press release from the transit service, those hoping to use the paratransit program, a shared ride program for people with disabilities, must now set up an in-person interview with CAT officials.

“The goal of this updated eligibility process is to ensure that only persons who meet the regulatory criteria are regarded as eligible for Paratransit Service, making this vital service more efficient,” the press release reads. “Eligibility is based on limitations to individual abilities, not just the presence of a disability. CAT fixed route buses are fully accessible to persons with disabilities and seniors.”

The change went into effect Feb. 1 and follows a model devised by Easter Seals Project ACTION, an organization commissioned by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration to ensure accessible community transportation nationwide.

To apply or re-apply for the paratransit program, an application must be completed and verified by a health care professional. Applications can be obtained at www.catchacat.org, or at the Joe Murray Rivers Jr. Intermodal Transit Center, 610 W. Oglethorpe Ave., from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday. After an application is submitted, CAT Mobility staff will schedule an interview with the applicant to determine whether they are eligible for paratransit service. CAT is contracting with St. Joseph/Candler to assess applicants for paratransit. A decision will be issued within 21 days of the in-person interview.
