ADA Compliance Will Cost Liberty Bowl $12 Million

December 6, 2012

The City of Memphis and the federal government have reached an agreement to bring Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, ABC 24 reports. The deal will cost the city about $12 million, much lower than the previously estimated $40 million.

The government has threatened to sue the city over compliance issues for years but now a clear path to compliance which includes adding 282 wheelchair-accessible seats and another 282 companion seats has been laid out. Once an official agreement is signed, the city will have one year to complete the renovations, according to the report.

Wharton said the settling of the issue also will allow the broader Fairgrounds redevelopment to move forward.
