Mother Crusades for Elevator Repair

August 26, 2012
Source: The Marietta Daily Journal

A Kennesaw Mountain High School parent has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice alleging that the rights of her son were violated under the Americans with Disabilities Act because the elevator her son uses at the school has had problems that prevented him from attending classes. Sharon O’Grady, who is a school nurse at Powers Ferry Elementary in east Cobb, filed the complaint with the federal department Friday. Her 16-year-old son, Brent O’Grady, is a sophomore at Kennesaw Mountain and was born with spina bifida, which causes paralysis to his legs. He has used a wheelchair his whole life. On his first day of school, Brett could not attend two of his four classes because the only elevator in the school was broken.
