U.S. Department of Labor Highlights the Employment of Women with Disabilities

This week marks the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In 1990, the ADA took an essential step in combating the discrimination and obstacles Americans with disabilities face regularly. The Womens Bureau is celebrating the silver anniversary of the Act by announcing new resources on the employment experiences of women with disabilities.

Please join the Womens Bureau for our webinar, Women and the Americans with Disabilities Act, on Tuesday, July 28th at 1:00pm EST. We will examine the effects of the ADA on women in respect to pregnancy accommodations, domestic violence, and employment.

New Resources: Issue Brief and Guide

This week, the DOL released an Issue Brief that outlines some of the key economic, employment, and educational characteristics of women with disabilities. These data show that women with disabilities remain underrepresented in the labor force. Though they compose 4 percent of the working age population, women with disabilities represent only 1.5 percent of the workforce. Their poverty rate is much higher, as well: The poverty rate is 28.8 percent for working-age people with disabilities living in poverty, compared to 12.3 percent for those without disabilities.

We also released a guide for employers that provides information on working women with disabilities and articulates the business case for hiring individuals with disabilities. The guide seeks to dispel some of the myths that might discourage employers from hiring individuals with disabilities. For example, research shows that half of requested workplace accommodations cost nothing to implement, and the remainder generally cost less than $500. The guide also details a variety of tax deductions and credits employers can access when they accommodate workers with disabilities at their workplaces.

These resources demonstrate, when it comes to hiring workers with disabilities, employers can do well by doing good.

The U.S. Department of Labor developed additional resources in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the ADA, including a timeline of the ADA, worker stories, an inclusive internship guide, and more.
