For National Disability Employment Awareness month, Mississippi Partnerships for Employment and lawmakers will have "Take Your Legislator to Work Day" events.
Members of the Mississippi Legislature will visit the work places of people with disabilities, starting Tuesday with state Senator David Blount, Democrat-Jackson, going to the Disabilities Rights Mississippi office in downtown Jackson. Other events will be held throughout the month across the state.
State Senator Sean Tindell, Republican-Gulfport, said: "We should do all we can to encourage those who are willing and able to utilize their skills to better the workforce. I have great admiration for any individual who does not let their disability prevent them from reaching their goals."
In January of 2014, Governor Phil Bryant signed an executive order declaring that agencies should begin making policy changes that encourage integration and employment for those with disabilities.
The Mississippi Partnerships for Employment project is a joint collaboration of state agencies and disability advocacy agencies.
