Kroger Tests Specially Designed Cart for Shoppers with Disabilities

December 17, 2013

Test markets are quite common. A new product is developed and before national distribution that product is sold locally to get consumer response. You might expect the Kroger Store in Sunbury Mills Plaza to be a test market for a new food product; but the Sunbury Kroger has the distinction of being one of three Ohio test markets for Caroline’s Cart, a shopping cart designed specifically for children and adults with disabilities.

According to the Caroline’s Cart website the [new design of this] shopping cart allows a child or adult to be able to shop with a parent or caregiver, releasing them from the effort and dangers of having to fit a child into the seat or basket of a standard shopping cart, or pushing and pulling a wheelchair and a shopping cart, or leaving the child out of the shopping experience all together.

“Having a child with special needs, I know the struggles of grocery shopping,” said Caroline’s Cart founder Drew Long. “Central Ohio area families should be aware that these locations now have an accessible shopping cart for older children and adults with special needs.”

Long said Caroline’s Cart is not a variation of an already existing product; that it’s a first-ever patented [shopping cart for individuals with disabilities].

Kroger is making history,” Long said. “Caroline’s Cart will help millions of families.”

Carol Peifer, Director of The Alternative Center on Harrison Street in Sunbury and the mother of [an] adult with Downs Syndrome, said the Sunbury Kroger Caroline’s Cart would be invaluable to families that have a loved one with [disabilities].

“I’m so pleased that these carts are being test marketed right here in Delaware County,” Peifer said. “As a community we can get this information out to families that will benefit from these carts, and Kroger’s will purchase more of them to place in their stores.”
