Florida Takes the Term “Mental Retardation” Out of Laws

Gov. Rick Scott signed the Intellectual Disabilities Bill ceremonially on Thursday during an Agency for Persons with Disabilities town hall meeting in Orlando. “Mental retardation” was once considered a medical term, but it has fallen out of favor because it has developed into a slang term. Legislators feel it promotes negative stereotypes of people with intellectual disabilities.
